Dear Steve & Jon, I have been told that an interviewer’s first impressions are important, but do we have any control over them? Signed: Slow Starter |

Dear Slow Starter, Remember the old adage, “You can’t judge a book by its cover”? Well, forget it, because we all do just that: we judge others by his/her appearance. Much research has gone into this subject, and the findings all conclude that we make quick judgments of a person, based on our first impression. Not only should you dress appropriately for an interview, but when you attend Professional Associations or Networking Groups, you also should “dress up.” When you do begin your new job, continue to dress well, to make a positive impression on your superiors. A better adage to remember is “You never have a second chance to make a first impression.” |
Dear Slow Starter, During the first ten seconds, every interviewer will form opinions regarding almost every aspect of your candidacy: how well qualified you are, your energy level, how much fun you will be to work with and how well you fit the team. Once formed, it is very difficult to change those impressions. The good thing is, if you can concentrate on correctly communicating the right impressions during those first ten seconds, the beneficial results may affect you for the rest of your career. Energetic pace, good posture, friendly smile, polished shoes, neat grooming, conservative business attire, firm but comfortable handshake, good eye contact – together can bias the interview in your favor. |
