Dear Steve & Jon, I have just been approached by a former employer and have been asked to rejoin them. I did not think that ever happened. What factors should I consider? Signed: Boomerang |

Dear Boomerang, Recently I wrote about, why you should never accept a counter-offer from your current company, but this situation is entirely different. Now you have more experience to offer, and apparently, you left your prior company with an excellent reputation there. However, don't jump to return to what might seem like a homecoming, but evaluate the offer as you would any other offer. – i.e., compensation, career potential and particularly, your original reason for leaving. |
Dear Boomerang, While some companies never rehire an employee who has left them, other companies have a practice of automatically contacting past employees whom they already know. Likewise, defense contractors have appreciated workers leaving and returning with the ebb and flow of new contracts. You should carefully evaluate whether the series of moves on your resume will be interpreted as career growth or stagnation. |
